Fading Gingrich attacks Romney in ad

The White House contenders courted Florida’s sizable Hispanic vote, many of them Cubans, with appearances on Friday at the Hispanic Leadership Network, where Romney received an unusually warm reception and the reaction to Gingrich was more sedate.Bouncing back after losing the South Carolina primary to Gingrich on Saturday, Romney had an 8-percentage point lead over him in a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday. A Quinnipiac University poll gave him a 9-percentage point edge. The Reuters/Ipsos online poll gave Romney 41 percent and Gingrich 33 percent ahead of Saturday’s contest. That margin is similar to three polls released on Thursday that all showed Romney taking control of the battle in Florida, where the former Massachusetts governor enjoys a financial and organizational advantage over Gingrich.Romney battered the former House of Representatives speaker in two debates this week, wounding him in the same format that has helped fuel Gingrich’s campaign. With the debates now over, Gingrich will need some other way to reverse the tide that appears to be going against him, Quinnipiac University pollster Peter Brown said.Tuesday’s Florida primary is the fourth contest in the state-by-state battle for the Republican nomination to challenge President Barack Obama, a Democrat, in the November 6 U.S. election. Romney won in New Hampshire and former Senator Rick Santorum won the first contest in Iowa.Romney repeatedly attacked Gingrich at Thursday’s debate in Florida, scoring points on immigration, candidates’ finances and even lunar exploration. That was Romney on Red Bull, Republican strategist Ron Bonjean said. You could tell Newt was tired, he’s carrying a heavy load. He was counting on pure momentum to carry him through Florida, and that momentum has stopped. At a campaign event in Cape Canaveral, Florida, Romney reminded the crowd of his debate performance. How about that debate last night? Wasn’t that fun? Romney asked. I’ve had the fun of two debates where I had to stand up and battle, and battling was fun. ‘CUBA WILL BE FREE’3An energized Romney, whom Gingrich has described as the most anti-immigrant candidate in the Republican race, won several standing ovations from the Hispanic crowd in Miami earlier on Friday. There is a time coming soon when Cuba will be free, Romney told them, adding America can’t sit back in dealing with the island nation off the coast of Florida. Gingrich received a much quieter response, once again mocking Romney’s call for self-deportation of illegal immigrants as a fantasy. It’s not a solution.Gingrich said the concept might work for younger illegal immigrants who had been in the United States a short time, but not for older immigrants with deep family ties. They should be allowed to apply for citizenship through local councils similar to draft boards, he said.A Florida win for Romney would put him in a strong position to capture the nomination as the primary map tilts in his favor in February with contests in seven states where he has the potential for strong showings.Next up on February 4 is Nevada, where Romney won with 51 percent of the vote during his failed 2008 presidential bid. On February 7 Minnesota and Colorado hold caucuses and Missouri holds a primary. Gingrich did not make the ballot in Missouri.Four of the states with February contests – Nevada, Maine, Colorado and Minnesota – use caucus systems, which often require greater organization to rally voter turnout. That could help Romney take advantage of his superior financial and staff resources. On February 28, Michigan and Arizona hold primaries. Romney was raised in Michigan, where his father was a governor and car executive.A new Gingrich television ad in Florida asked: What kind of man would mislead, distort and deceive just to win an election? This man would be Mitt Romney, the ad’s narrator said.Romney’s camp said the sharp tone from Gingrich was a sign he was desperate to distract from his own record as House speaker, where he faced an ethics probe, and as a consultant with mortgage giant Freddie Mac.It is laughable to see lectures on honesty coming from a paid influence peddler who suffered an unprecedented ethics reprimand, was forced to pay a $300,000 penalty, and resigned in disgrace at the hands of his own party, Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said.

Convicted Jackson doctor seeks freedom pending appeal

Dr. Conrad Murray said in court papers filed in Los Angeles that he would agree to electronic monitoring or other conditions. But he asked to be set free while he appeals his conviction for involuntary manslaughter in the Thriller singer’s 2009 death.Murray, 58, was sentenced to four years in November after a six-week trial. Witnesses testified that he was guilty of gross negligence for giving Jackson regular doses of the powerful anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid, and failing to monitor him.According to his defense attorney on Friday, Murray is being held in a solitary cell and has his hands chained to his waist, or to a table, when he is allowed out.attorney J. Michael Flanagan wrote in a declaration to Los Angeles Superior Court that Murray’s sentence is very severe considering the circumstances of the case.Flanagan wrote that Murray’s conviction stemmed from an unusual situation, a close friendship with Michael Jackson and a desire to assist him through a difficult situation. Dr. Murray may have made wrong choices and not have exercised good medical judgment at times, but he never intended to injure anyone.Murray, who pleaded not guilty and did not testify at his trial, said in the court filing that he had been told his appeal will take well over a year before an opinion is rendered. He asked for his request for release be heard by the court on February 24.Murray last month asked for a publicly funded lawyer because he could not fund his appeal himself. He said in Friday’s papers that he would try and find work to support his children if he was allowed out.Jackson, 50, died in Los Angeles on June 25, 2009 of an overdose of propofol and sedatives just weeks before a series of planned comeback concerts.

Two Florida Republicans say time to temper immigration rhetoric

The appeals by Senator Marco Rubio and former Governor Jeb Bush came as Republican candidates courted the state’s sizable Hispanic vote four days before Tuesday’s Florida primary. We must admit there are those among us that have used rhetoric that is harsh and intolerable and inexcusable, Rubio said in a speech on Friday at the Hispanic Leadership Network in Miami. And we must admit, myself included, that sometimes we’ve been too slow to condemn that language for what it is, he added.Rubio, a Cuban-American, joined the ranks of a growing number of Republicans who worry about the party’s appeal to Hispanic voters. Polls show hard-line Republican positions on illegal immigration and border control pose a challenge to Republican attempts to win over some Latino voters.Bush also called for Republicans to temper their comments. Hispanic people hear these debates and I think you turn them off, it’s not a good thing, he said late Thursday. The Florida primary, the fourth in the state-by-state battle for the Republican presidential nomination, offers Republican candidates their first chance to gauge support among Hispanics.Whoever becomes the nominee to take on President Barack Obama, a Democrat, will need support from Latinos, the largest and fastest-growing U.S. minority group, in order to win the White House. While immigration is less of a defining issue among Florida Hispanics compared to others nationwide, the tone of Republican comments have not gone unnoticed by many Latinos. As Republican candidates crisscross the state, they face an increasingly diverse Latino community whose vote could help define not only Tuesday’s Republican primary but the outcome of November’s general election in a crucial swing state. For years, the Hispanic vote in Florida was mostly identified with Cuban-Americans who often voted Republican and whose political views were largely shaped by the Cuban exile community and their opposition to Cuba’s Fidel Castro. But new Hispanic voting blocs have emerged in the state, including a politically important community of Puerto Ricans, the second largest group of Hispanics, and a growing number of South Americas. Florida is home to the third-largest Latino population in the United States after California and Texas. Latinos represent over 13 percent of Florida’s 11. million registered voters, according to data from the Florida Division of Elections compiled by the Pew Hispanic Center. Nearly a third of eligible Hispanic voters in Florida are of Cuban descent, while 28 percent are of Puerto Rican origin, according to the data. Mexican-Americans, who account for nearly 60 percent of Hispanic eligible voters nationwide, represent just 9 percent of Florida voters. Once consistently Republican voters, Hispanic voters began to shift five years ago as a non-Cuban-American electorate took form, led by the fast-growing Puerto Rican community. In 2008, Obama won more than half of Florida’s Hispanic vote, in part by riding broad support from Puerto Ricans.Since then, the number of Hispanics registered as Democrats has widened by more than 100,000 voters over those registering as Republicans. As recently as 2006 more Hispanics in Florida declared themselves Republicans.Puerto Ricans, many of whom are registered Democrats or independents, are on pace to overtake the Cubans as the dominant Hispanic political force in Florida as their numbers grow, said Luis Martinez Fernandez, a history professor at the University of Central Florida. The Puerto Rican electorate has already begun to neutralize the Cuban voting bloc, he said.Immigration is less of a central issue to Puerto Ricans and Cubans than to other Hispanics. Puerto Ricans are American citizens by birth since the island is a U.S. territory. Cubans enjoy special status under U.S. immigration laws and those who reach U.S. soil can qualify for American citizenship within a year.Fernandez said that Republican positions on immigration were still turning off some Puerto Ricans.Even though Puerto Ricans are not that focused on immigration issues, they were very much alienated back in 2008 by the Republican Party’s anti-immigration surge, he said. They are certainly affected by the anti-immigration attitudes.A poll by Univision/ABC News released this week showed Mitt Romney holding a 15-point lead over Newt Gingrich among Florida Latino Republican voters, with his support coming from both Cubans and Puerto Ricans. Some 35 percent of Hispanic Republicans plan to support Romney, compared to 20 percent for Gingrich.Romney holds a lead despite having a tougher stance on illegal immigration than Gingrich. Romney has vowed to veto the Dream Act, a proposal that would allow some children of illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. However, the poll also showed Florida Latino voters would likely support Obama in a head-to-head matchup with either Romney or Gingrich even though the president has seen his support among Hispanics decline over his handling of the economy.

Dougherty gang jailbreak plot foiled in Colorado

Dylan Stanley Dougherty was accused of having stashed a homemade knife in his cell as part of a plot to escape from the Huerfano County jail through a plumbing duct and then bust out his sister, according to an arrest affidavit.Dougherty, 26, was charged with conspiracy to escape and possession of contraband in addition to the attempted murder charges lodged against him and his siblings for a high-speed chase and shootout with police last summer.Dougherty and his siblings, Lee Grace and Ryan Dougherty, are being held on $1. million bond each. The trio were arrested in southern Colorado last August following a nationwide dragnet after they were named as suspects in the attempted shooting of a Florida police officer and a Georgia bank robbery. But an escape plot unraveled during a January 10 routine search of jail cells, police said. Officers said they found an 8-inch knife under Dylan Dougherty’s bunk and discovered that an access hatch to the jail pod’s plumbing system had been tampered with.A female deputy shimmied through the hatch and saw footprints leading to the female prisoners’ pod, where Dylan Dougherty had apparently delivered a letter to his sister, which investigators later found. The letter stated for Lee to have all her personal belongings ready, and that Dylan was going to get in through the ceiling to the control room where the detention staff are, and drop down on them, the affidavit said.He stated that he would then tie them up and take the keys from them, and then they would just walk out, it added. The siblings were captured after they crashed a stolen car following a running gunbattle with pursuing police officers near Walsenburg, Colorado. Grace Lee Dougherty was shot and wounded by a police officer when she leveled a machine pistol at him. Investigators also said they found taunting letters to the FBI and jail staff, the affidavit said. In letters addressed to law enforcement, Dylan Dougherty wrote to his jailers, I have enjoyed staying here, so don’t take this personal. In a separate letter to the FBI, he told them he would be long gone by the time they read the missive, and gave details of his escape plan, the affidavit said. He was transferred from the Huerfano County jail to a neighboring county lockup after the plot was uncovered, officials said.

Could another Republican join the 2012 race?

Mitt Romney is riding high in Florida and threatening to take charge of the Republican nomination with a win in Tuesday’s primary there. But even as some party conservatives appear to be coming around to supporting him, many are concerned that the bitter fight between Romney and Newt Gingrich has damaged both of them to the extent that neither would be able to defeat Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.Grassroots conservative activists are worried that Gingrich’s attacks on Romney’s business background have given Democrats a big hammer to use against the former Massachusetts governor this fall.Meanwhile, mainstream Republicans think Romney is right when he says Gingrich is a Washington insider with deep personal and political baggage and more half-baked ideas than the corner pastry shop. The Romney-Gingrich battle has left many Americans in a sour mood about the Republican contenders.A Washington Post poll this week found that Romney and Gingrich each were viewed favorably by only about 30 percent of Americans. So is there a chance that a popular Republican might come to the rescue and snatch the presidential nomination?Analysts say there is still a sliver of time for another Republican candidate to jump into the race. This year’s campaign calendar is loaded with spring contests, meaning a Republican could enter the race in early February and still compete directly in states with at least 1,200 of the 2,282 or so Republican delegates, according to the University of Virginia Center for Politics. It takes 1,150 delegates to win the nomination. If Republicans look at both Gingrich and Romney and think they can’t win, it’s an opening for another candidate, said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics. What that candidate has to do is win a series of big primaries and prove the point that this individual is electable, and that Republicans want a new candidate. ‘THERE’S AN OPENING’3It would take a powerhouse politician to pull it off. Think New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, for example. Or Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Those three and other big names have repeatedly ruled out a 2012 campaign and seem content to wait until 2016, if a Republican does not win this year. Christie has endorsed Romney.Anyone who did attempt to jump into the race would need to be able to muster large amounts of money and support quickly, and be more politically nimble than the last late entrant — Texas Governor Rick Perry, who abandoned the race a week ago after poor performances in debates. There’s an opening, but there’s a big impediment, said Ipsos pollster Chris Jackson. Any individual who wants to exploit that has to hit the ground at a full sprint.Leading Republicans do not expect someone else to enter the race. But they do foresee an increasingly aggressive movement to persuade conservatives to give up their flirtation with the fiery Gingrich and make peace with the more moderate Romney. An example of this came Thursday from former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole. He told National Review Online that when Gingrich was speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, he had a new idea every minute, and most of them were off the wall.If Gingrich is the nominee, it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state, and federal offices, Dole added. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him, and that fact speaks for itself.Ari Fleischer, a Republican analyst who was a White House press secretary for President George W. Bush, told Reuters that a Gingrich victory in Florida’s primary would have repercussions extending to the Republican nominating convention in Tampa in late August. If Newt wins Florida, I expect serious conversations to develop about how to stop Newt at the convention, said Fleischer, who is neutral in the 2012 Republican contest. My sense is that enough people who know Newt are scared of Newt winning. Enough congressmen and senators who have to run for re-election this year are scared at what he might do at the top of the ticket, he said. One reason the battle has been so tough this year is because Republicans do not have an obvious choice as their nominee. We always have a competitive race and it always gets kind of rough when it narrows to two people, said Republican strategist Charlie Black. The parlor game in Washington these days is, these guys are killing each other and we need to find an alternative candidate. It never happens. Since 1964 we’ve always been able to rally behind our candidate. One complicating factor: Ron Paul. The libertarian Texas representative is running fourth in the Republican race, behind the two leaders and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum. Paul has insisted he will not launch a third-party bid in order to rally his devoted supporters to his causes, which include a greatly reduced military presence overseas and budget cuts at home. But he is leaving the door open, a crack. A third-party bid by Paul could have a profound influence on the November 6 elections. A third-party effort by Texas businessman Ross Perot in 1992 contributed to incumbent Republican President George H.W. Bush’s loss to Democrat Bill Clinton that year by drawing Republicans and independents from Bush.Paul draws a mix of supporters across the political spectrum, from Republicans fed up with conventional candidates to anti-war Democrats.Paul told NPR this week that it’s awfully premature to say whether he will launch a third-party run.We have a few months to go before I will need an answer, he said.

Korean Bae sets early Torrey pace, Mickelson misses cut

Bae, a rookie on the 2012 PGA Tour who clinched last year’s Japan Golf Tour order of merit title, fired a five-under-par 67 on the tricky South Course, one of two layouts hosting this week’s event. In light breezes and dazzling sunshine at Torrey Pines, Bae posted a 12-under total of 132 to finish two ahead of American Hunter Mahan, who carded a 65 on the easier North Course.Australia’s Robert Allenby was a further stroke back at nine under after returning a 67 on the South course.Three-times champion Mickelson ended a disappointing week prematurely, however, as his five-birdie 68 on the North layout was not good enough to help him make the cut.The American left-hander had faced an uphill task coming into Friday’s second round after opening with a woeful 77 on Thursday.I don’t feel like there’s any one area that I feel bad about my game, Mickelson told reporters after finishing at one-over 145.It’s just that I’m not bringing it from the practice session on to the golf course yet. I’m not sure why that is, but the good news is my practice sessions have been great in every area.Bae, who booked his place on the 2012 PGA Tour via qualifying school in December, charged up the leaderboard with birdies at the fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth.Though he bogeyed the 12th and the 17th, he birdied both par-fives on the back nine – the 13th and the last – to stay at the top of the leaderboard. The South course is very tough, and it’s not easy for me but today was pretty good, said the 25-year-old Bae. I made a lot of birdies today and just two bogeys so I’m happy right now. I hit a pretty good driver and pretty good iron shots. Sometimes I missed a few putts, short putts, but my putter has mainly been pretty good so I have confidence. Asked what his strategy would be for the final two rounds to be played solely on the South Course, Bae replied: There are many good players here and I will try to be aggressive tomorrow and Sunday. The cut was projected to fall at two-under 142.

Republican senator wants Keystone XL bill

Obama put TransCanada’s $7 billion Canada-to-Texas pipeline on ice last week, saying that the administration needed more time to review its environmental impacts.Hoeven’s bill would seek to put Congress effectively in control of the pipeline decision and take it away from the Obama administration. But any such measure faces the steep hurdle of having to be approved by the Democratic-controlled Senate. And even if it did, it would have to be signed by the president in order to become law.

Stanley sets Torrey pace as Mickelson misses cut

In light breezes and dazzling sunshine at Torrey Pines, the big-hitting Stanley carded a four-under-par 68 on the tricky South Course, one of two layouts hosting the fourth PGA Tour event of the year.Fellow American Brandt Snedeker was alone in second after firing a sizzling eight-under 64 on the easier North layout with South Korean Bae Sang-moon (67) and American Martin Flores (67) a further stroke back at 12 under.Three-times champion Mickelson ended a disappointing week prematurely, however, as his five-birdie 68 on the North Course was not good enough to help him make the cut.The American left-hander had faced an uphill task coming into Friday’s second round after opening with a woeful 77 on Thursday.I don’t feel like there’s any one area that I feel bad about my game, Mickelson told reporters after finishing at one-over 145.It’s just that I’m not bringing it from the practice session on to the golf course yet. I’m not sure why that is, but the good news is my practice sessions have been great in every area.Stanley, co-leader with compatriot Spencer Levin overnight, recovered from a double-bogey on his front nine to take control of the tournament with a seven-birdie display.GOOD RECOVERYI just kept telling myself I was playing well and just keep doing what I’m doing, said Stanley, a PGA Tour rookie last year. I’ve played too much good golf so far this week to let one hole get in the way. I feel like I’ve got a pretty good game plan for this golf course and I just had to focus on executing that, added Stanley, who covered his back nine in four-under 32. I recovered nicely. It’s still a long ways to go, but I’m happy with where I am. Snedeker was especially delighted to be in title contention, having been on crutches for five weeks at the end of last year following hip surgery in early November. I feel great, the double PGA Tour winner said after mixing nine birdies with one bogey. I’m driving the ball as good as I’ve ever driven it in my career, which isn’t saying a lot but it’s saying enough for me right now. I didn’t start playing really regularly until New Year’s Day … and decided to give Palm Springs (last week’s Humana Challenge) a shot because I felt pretty well. It held up pretty well last week and feels great now. The warm weather’s helping and being here’s helping, so hopefully it stays like that the rest of the week.Keegan Bradley, winner of last year’s PGA Championship, was at seven under after carding a 68, one stroke better than fellow American and world number nine Dustin Johnson (72).Former world number one Vijay Singh of Fiji was at five under, after following his opening 64 with a 75, while three-times major champion Ernie Els was at three under after a 70.The cut fell at two-under 142 with former major winners Angel Cabrera of Argentina and South Korea’s Yang Yong-eun among those failing to advance.
